Teaching Hañsa Flow

Hansa Flow is a practice that combines four stages of developmental movement. These four stages are, quadruped, standing, prone and supine. Each stage has a unique movement phasing, this phase is repeated a number of time to ensure maximal understanding of the requirements  needed within this developmental process.

The practice is designed to take the practitioner through a staged flow sequence that is broken down into basic steps.  The sequences are organised into 5-6 movement combinations that is choreographed into a flowing rhythm.  The objective is to teach each student the specific choreography of each stage, and encourage within each student a certain level of independence and ownership to enhance the learning of movement.  The basic premise of Hañsa Flow practice is to further extend Hañsa Yoga therapy ideals into the realm of movement and flow practices.

The goal of Hañsa Flow practices is to develop a personal learning space that assists the practitioner in enhancing their ability to discern their movement choices, and illuminate some of the preset conditions or biases that habituate movement or certain postural asymmetries.

It is important to elicit feed back and conversation around the practice, as well as and any difficulties that might be experienced.  It is also vitally important to be open to making any modification to the sequence that supports both attitudinal and physical requirements.   The key for the teacher is the managing of expectation and offering a creative space for problem solving.  This teaches students to self manage and take control of their needs.

The practice is divide into 3 segments. These segments enables a structure to be formed and postures and themes to be communicated. The three segments are, Seed Practice, Development, Yielding

Seed Practice - All the seed postures are to establish direct and settle into a rhythm and tempo of observation.

Development - The natural progression of movement into developmental stages of posture and locomotion, emphasising circular patterns and sequencing that expands body awareness. This stage has four phases.

Yielding - An opportunity to release and deconstruct the practice back to its original intention. At this stage we can introduce a maximum of three static positions.
